LaVar Ball and the Big Baller Brand Want to Create Their Own League

Richard Mackson - USA Today Sports

It was just a matter of time.

LaVar Ball, the outspoken, controversial owner of Big Baller marketing and shoe company the father of NBA rookie Lonzo Ball and his two brothers, says he is going to give amateur players in this country a chance to get paid instead of going to college.

Ball is reportedly ready to fund The Junior Basketball Association through the Big Baller Brand with players being paid anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 a month, according to a report in ESPN. Ball said he hopes to feature 80 players for 10 teams with games potentially being paid in NBA arenas located in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Brooklyn and Dallas.

“Getting these players is going to be easy,” he said. “This is giving guys a chance to get a head start on their career, to be seen by pro scouts, and we’re going to pay them because someone has to play them.”

Ball said the league would follow NBA rules.

It sounds like an interesting idea. But we’ll take a wait and see attitude that prospects bite once the funding solidfied at the idea of playing in a unique development league.
